Timothy Jones, 23, was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Charinez Jefferson, who was walking with a friend to a Marquette Park corner store when Jones shot her eight times at point-blank range as she begged for her life.
Doctors saved her baby, delivered by emergency surgery after the shooting in August 2011, though his condition is unlikely to improve.
"You took her life, you left her baby clinging to life and to this day he is attached to a ventilator that breathes for him," Jefferson's aunt Betty Lee said in court Monday before Jones was sentenced. "You left her other son wondering, 'When is she coming home?' I know this because day after day, every time the bell would ring or someone knocked on the door, he would run to the door saying 'ma ma' and when the door opened, you would see the sadness in his face, because it wasn't his mom."
