High levels of lead found in water in communities across Illinois, study says
CHICAGO -- A Chicago Tribune survey of state records shows a dozen water systems in the Chicago area had high levels of lead at some point in the past 12 years.

The records date back to 2004.  All told, nearly 200 water systems across the state exceeded E.P.A. standards for lead in at least one year.  The systems serve a total of more than 800,000 people.

Communities affected include Berwyn and Forest View in Cook County; York Township in DuPage; Barrington and Volo in Lake County; and Marengo and Richmond in McHenry County.

The E.P.A. declares an action level when lead readings surpass 15 parts per billion in at least 10 percent of a system’s customers.
