At 40 and seven months pregnant with number 7, Lashon Bilbro-Beverly was already at elevated risk when she went to the emergency room of Norwegian American Hospital in 2010 complaining of shortness of breath.
After her doctor diagnosed her with pneumonia, however, Bilbro-Beverly was never admitted to intensive care. Instead she waited through the next day in a regular room at the Northwest Side hospital, even though she repeatedly reported to a nurse that her condition was worsening.
That night the mother of six — a receptionist at two Chicago radio stations — was found dead. About 45 minutes later, a baby boy was delivered stillborn by cesarean section.
More than six years after Bilbro-Beverly's death, an unusual trial in Chicago's federal courthouse ended this week with a $9 million jury verdict in favor of her husband, Eric Beverly, who alleged that negligence on the part of the hospital, doctor and nurse caused the deaths.
