The Cook County Sheriff's Department, whose joint investigation with the FBI uncovered the illegal operation in 2009, held a reinterment ceremony Tuesday to return the human remains and grave items recovered during the investigation to the ground with dignity and respect.
"It's tragic beyond words and I'm so horribly sorry for everything that you've been through," Sheriff Tom Dart said at a short ceremony prior to the re-burial. "I wish there was more that we could have done to try to give you some type of relief from the pain."
The ceremony, which was preceded by a 23-car caravan through the burial grounds, was held in a remote rear section of the historic African-American cemetery where most of the exhumed remains were discovered in 2009.
